December 6, 2018: U-Haul International Inc., is planning to convert a former Ultra Foods grocery store to self-storage facility in Kanakee Illinois. The property comprises 77,000-square-foot building at 1200 Kennedy Drive, in the Shoppes at Meadowview complex. The city council unanimously approved a conditional-use permit for the property, according to the source.
According to the Marketing president for U-Haul Co. of Illinois Aaron Freeman, the company spent about two years searching for a suitable conversion property in the Kankakee-Bradley-Bourbonnais region. About a dozen sites were considered before the company chose the grocery store.
U-Haul International planning to invest $5 to $6 million to add 50,000 to 55,000 square feet of storage space to the facility. Trailer and truck rentals are currently available at the site, according to the source.
Established in 1945, U-Haul is an American moving equipment and storage rental company, based in Phoenix, Arizona. The company owns more than 32 million square feet of storage space.
